Thailand is the benchmark for retreat value. But for UK men who want serious training without a 12-hour flight, Spain is the answer, and the quality gap with Southeast Asia has been closing.

Two to three hours from any UK airport. Reliable sun from April through October. A growing infrastructure of purpose-built training facilities, nutrition programmes, and recovery setups that didn't exist five years ago.

Why Spain over Thailand for some men

The Thailand comparison gets made constantly, and Thailand wins on value. But Spain has advantages that are genuinely significant for certain situations:

Flight time. Two to three hours rather than eleven. For a 5 or 7-day retreat, you lose effectively two days to travel on a Thailand trip. From the UK, Spain is a day trip each way, you can arrive Saturday morning and start training that afternoon.

No jet lag. Spain is one or two hours ahead of the UK. You train at the same rhythm your body is already on.

Winter viability. The Canary Islands aside, Thailand's wet seasons and Spain's southern coast don't overlap, but Spain also works for shorter windows. A January week on the Costa del Sol is cold-ish but functional. Thailand in January on the Gulf Coast is optimal. But neither destination is ideal year-round.

Easier logistics for men with limited holiday. Five days in Mallorca requires one day's travel each way. Five days in Thailand requires at least two.

2 - 3 hrs

Compared to 11+ hours to Thailand. For 5-7 day retreats, Spain is more time-efficient, and equivalent facilities exist at slightly higher cost per week.

The three main destinations

Costa del Sol, body composition and bootcamps

The Costa del Sol has the highest concentration of UK-focused fitness retreat operations. Several companies run structured week-long programmes specifically designed for body composition: caloric deficit, twice-daily training, nutrition tracking, recovery protocols.

The format at the better operations is consistent: morning session at 7am (outdoor cardio or functional training, 90 minutes), breakfast, rest, afternoon session (weights or HIIT, 60-90 minutes), structured meals with macro tracking, and optional evening activity. It is not a holiday, it is an accelerated body composition week.

What makes Spain work for this format: the climate allows outdoor training year-round in the shoulder seasons, which produces better outcomes than indoor training camps. UV exposure and movement in actual sunlight does something to mood and cortisol that a gym cannot replicate.

Best for: men who want an intensive structured week to kickstart a cut, reset habits after a difficult period, or see what their body composition looks like when diet and training are optimised simultaneously for seven days.

Mallorca, cycling and endurance training

Mallorca has become one of the most significant endurance training destinations in Europe over the last decade. The road network in the Serra de Tramuntana is genuinely world-class, the same roads professional cycling teams use for spring training camps.

Several operators run structured cycling weeks: GPS-guided routes, support vehicles, daily briefings, and recovery massage. The better operations include power-based training with target zones and progress tracking, not just guided tours.

For non-cyclists: Mallorca's combination of terrain, climate, and decent hospitality infrastructure also makes it the best Spanish destination for multi-sport (run/swim/bike), trail running, or any outdoor endurance-focused week.

The food culture in Mallorca also helps. The island's Mediterranean diet, olive oil, fish, local vegetables, moderate portions, aligns naturally with performance eating in a way that Thai food also does but many UK retreat options don't.

Seb
Seb's Take

I did a cycling week in Mallorca in September. The Serra de Tramuntana roads are as good as the reputation, genuine climbs with proper gradients, minimal traffic, and views that make the suffering feel worthwhile. The recovery massage at the end of each day was not optional by day three. Power output by day five was measurably better than day one, which is all you want from a training week.

Ibiza, yoga and recovery

The Ibiza that most people know is not the Ibiza that works for this. The north of the island, around San Juan and the interior, has a very different character: quiet, rural, and increasingly home to serious yoga retreats and wellness centres.

The better Ibiza retreat operations offer structured yoga programmes (multiple sessions daily), meditation, massage, and clean food. The island's natural landscape, pine forests, dramatic coastline, good light, provides the environmental stimulus that makes recovery retreats work.

This is the right destination when the goal is not training harder but recovering properly. If you have been through a period of high stress, poor sleep, or accumulated physical and mental load, a week of yoga, massage, and clean food in a quiet environment produces results that no gym programme can replicate.

What to look for when booking

Verify the food setup. Many retreats describe "nutritious meals" without specifying protein targets or macro composition. For training-focused men, this matters. Confirm before booking whether meals are protein-adequate (aim for 2g per kg of body weight across the day) or juice-and-salad focused.

Check the training infrastructure. "Gym access included" in a hotel context often means a small room with a treadmill and a cable machine from 2009. Ask specifically: free weights, rack availability, daily programming or self-directed.

Read recent reviews. Spain retreat quality varies more than Thailand. The best operations have consistent recent reviews; the worst have sporadic excellent reviews from four years ago and nothing recent.

Check the season you're booking. July and August in southern Spain are hot enough to affect outdoor training quality. The operators who run year-round have usually adjusted their programmes for summer heat, morning sessions earlier, afternoon sessions in shade or indoors. Worth confirming.

Key Takeaway

Spain is the right destination when you want serious training without long-haul logistics, particularly Mallorca for cycling and endurance, Costa del Sol for structured body composition weeks. Thailand still wins on value if you have time for the flight. Spain wins on efficiency and accessibility.

Planning the logistics

A 7-night Spain retreat typically costs £700 to £1,500 all-inclusive excluding flights. Return flights from most UK airports to Malaga, Palma, or Ibiza are £80 to £200 depending on timing. Total spend for a serious week: roughly £1,000 to £1,800.

For the same total budget in Thailand, you would get a longer stay with better value, but you would also spend at least two travel days. The economics depend on what your time is worth.
