Private blood testing has expanded significantly in the UK over the last five years. Lola Health is one of the newer entrants, better design, a clinical consultation angle, and marketing aimed at men who want more than just a results PDF.

Here's what you actually get and whether it's worth the premium.

What Lola Health offers

Lola Health's core proposition is testing plus interpretation. Where Medichecks and most other private testing services deliver a results PDF with reference ranges, Lola Health includes clinical follow-up as a feature, a conversation with a clinician about what the results mean and what to do about them.

For men who are new to private hormone testing, this is genuinely useful. Testosterone results without context, particularly if SHBG is elevated or oestradiol is out of range, are easy to misread. Having a clinician explain the pattern rather than just the numbers has value.

What's included in their male hormone panels:

  • Total testosterone
  • SHBG and calculated free testosterone
  • LH and FSH (pituitary signalling)
  • Oestradiol (aromatisation check)
  • Prolactin
  • Cortisol (morning fasted)
  • Full thyroid (TSH, fT3, fT4 depending on panel tier)
  • Full blood count and metabolic markers on their premium panel

This is the right panel. Total testosterone alone is insufficient, as I've written about in the how to read your testosterone results guide, SHBG and LH change the clinical picture entirely.

How the testing works

Lola Health offers both home finger-prick kits and venous blood draw appointments at clinic locations.

For hormone panels specifically, the venous draw is worth the slight premium and additional organisation. Finger-prick samples are adequate for many markers but testosterone, especially when borderline, reads more accurately from a full venous sample. The morning timing matters regardless of method, test between 8am and 10am, fasted.

The results arrive with a doctor review note. The optional follow-up consultation (typically 20-30 minutes, video or phone) is the key differentiating feature from standard testing services.

Seb
Seb's Take

I used Lola Health's advanced panel when I was trying to make sense of an elevated SHBG result alongside what looked like normal-range total testosterone. The consultation was worth having, the clinician explained the free testosterone calculation, why my SHBG elevation was likely related to training load and chronic stress, and what markers to watch over the next six months. That conversation saved me a lot of confused Googling. Whether you need that consultation depends on where you are in understanding your own panel.

Lola Health vs Medichecks, the honest comparison

Both services are good. The choice depends on what you prioritise.

Neither is the wrong choice. Medichecks has the edge on price and breadth of test menu; Lola Health has the edge on clinical support and follow-up depth. If you want the blood test results plus a conversation about what they mean, Lola Health is the better option. If you want comprehensive testing at the most competitive price and are comfortable interpreting your own results, Medichecks is the standard recommendation.

What the panels don't tell you

Blood tests give you a snapshot, one morning, under specific conditions. Testosterone levels vary significantly with sleep, stress, training load, alcohol, and time of year.

A single panel is a starting point. What produces useful data is repeat testing under consistent conditions, same time of day, same day of the week, same pre-test protocol. For most men, two panels six months apart gives you more useful information than one panel at high cost.

Study

Intra-individual variation in serum testosterone was significant at 15-20% across repeat testing in the same subjects. Consistency of test conditions, time of day, fasting status, sleep quality, reduced variability but did not eliminate it, supporting the value of serial testing over single-point measurements.

15 - 20%
Intra-individual testosterone variability across repeat tests
This is why a single borderline result is not a diagnosis. Two consistently low morning fasted readings under controlled conditions is a clinical pattern. One reading is a data point.
Key Takeaway

Lola Health is a solid choice for men who want testing plus clinical interpretation, particularly if your results come back borderline or unusual and you want someone qualified to explain the pattern. Medichecks wins on price and breadth if you're confident reading your own results. Either is significantly better than NHS total-testosterone-only testing.

Getting started

For men testing for the first time, the right order is: panel first, interpretation after. Don't try to predict what your results will show before you have them, the surprising results are usually the ones that matter.
