Bacopa Monnieri
Ayurvedic herb that enhances memory and learning, but takes 8 to 12 weeks to work.
What is Bacopa Monnieri?
Bacopa monnieri is a creeping herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. The active compounds, bacosides, are thought to enhance synaptic communication, reduce oxidative stress in the brain, and modulate the cholinergic system. Unlike most nootropics, bacopa requires sustained supplementation to produce its effects.
What does the evidence say?
A 2001 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial by Roodenrys et al. found bacopa at 300mg/day for 12 weeks significantly improved memory acquisition and retention compared to placebo. A 2012 meta-analysis by Pase et al. in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, covering nine studies, found significant improvements in memory free recall. The effects appear to be cumulative and require at least 8 weeks of consistent supplementation.
Good evidence from several studies, but with some limitations in size, duration, or methodology.
Dosage guide
| Effective dose | 300–450mg of standardised extract (45% bacosides) per day |
| Maximum dose | No established upper limit; studies use up to 450mg without issues |
| Timing | With food: bacopa is fat-soluble and absorption is improved with meals containing fat. |
Best form to buy
Standardised extract at 45% bacosides. Raw bacopa powder without standardisation is much less reliable.
Who benefits most
Men looking to improve long-term memory and learning capacity. Particularly relevant for high cognitive load work: students, professionals under intellectual demand, men noticing age-related memory changes.
Side effects and safety
GI discomfort (nausea, bloating) is common, especially when first starting. Taking with food reduces this significantly. Can cause drowsiness at higher doses.

“Legitimately effective for memory but requires patience. Most people give up after two weeks expecting a caffeine-like effect and feel nothing. Stick with it for three months and the improvement in recall is noticeable.”
