Panax Ginseng
Ancient adaptogen with solid evidence for energy, cognition, and erectile function.
What is Panax Ginseng?
Panax ginseng is one of the most studied medicinal plants in the world, used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The active compounds, ginsenosides, have adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. It should not be confused with Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus), which is a different plant with different compounds.
What does the evidence say?
A 2010 Cochrane review of 35 randomised controlled trials found significant improvements in cognitive performance and quality of life with Panax ginseng. A 2012 meta-analysis by Jang et al. in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found red ginseng significantly improved erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction. A 2013 study by Kim et al. found Korean red ginseng significantly improved fatigue and energy levels in 90 patients.
Good evidence from several studies, but with some limitations in size, duration, or methodology.
Dosage guide
| Effective dose | 200–400mg of standardised extract per day (4–8% ginsenosides) |
| Maximum dose | 3,000mg/day (though this is well above what most studies use) |
| Timing | Morning on an empty stomach or before activity. Cycle use (8–12 weeks on, 2 weeks off) is often recommended. |
Best form to buy
Korean red ginseng extract standardised to ginsenoside content. Korean Red Ginseng Authority-certified products are well regulated.
Who benefits most
Men over 40 dealing with fatigue, cognitive sluggishness, or erectile concerns. Also relevant as an immune support supplement during periods of high stress.
Side effects and safety
Can cause insomnia, palpitations, and headache at high doses. Has some oestrogen-like activity in high amounts (though this is rarely clinically relevant). Potential interaction with blood thinners and diabetes medication.

“One of the most credible multi-use supplements available. The erectile function data specifically is impressive for a natural compound. Worth a 12-week trial if energy and drive are concerns.”
